Loved Mary Mac’s cornbread so much trainers used to order dozens of loaves at a time for the zoo’s most famous resident. In order to keep guests and staff safe due to COVID, the restaurant at 224 Ponce de Leon Ave. in Midtown shuttered back in March. Some longtime regulars worried it might be for good. Today, the restaurant is the only tearoom that remains and has expanded to more than 13,000 square feet with six dining rooms. FOX 5 drone video shows the extent of the damage at Mary Mac's Team Room in Midtown Atlanta after part of its roof collapsed overnight following heavy rain. In 1972, even after serving multiple bank presidents in her dining room daily for a decade, Lupo was still unable to get a bank loan as she slowly bought up the block of businesses to expand her 75-seat place. Lupo again relied on family funds and borrowing on her home and car. It's what Mary would have wanted. It was the end of World War II and enterprising women were in search of a living. Many women, after the war, were widowed. Many needed to find ways to become breadwinners.

The waiters are on to your funny business and will collect them after taking your orders. After closing in March due to the pandemic, Mary Mac’s reopens for takeout and curbside pick-up on Monday, November 2, followed by limited capacity dine-in service on Monday, November 9. Martin and the Bodnars also co-own Taco Mac. No one was injured when part of Mary Mac's Tea Room's roof collapsed on March 6, 2024. Crews are working to clean up the damage and repair the iconic restaurant in Midtown.

Second, he was not going to change a thing about the restaurant or its menu. Her diligence elevated the Mary Mac’s experience to the stratospheric level from which it hasn’t dropped since. With that in mind, here are 15 of the best places to pop in for a cuppa, or host a full-blown tea soirée.

The chicken skin was crispy, the meat was juicy, and the gravy was a delightfully salty blanket on top, soaking the rice bed and making every bite a treat. The tomato pie was a unique hybrid of heavy from the Ritz crust and mayo and light from the tomatoes, with a surprisingly complex flavor profile that took me a few bites to fully appreciate. And I’m no food critic (if you couldn’t tell already) so I’ll just say the mac and cheese was exactly what you’re looking for with mac and cheese. The food is done in much the way MacKenzie did it, and her predecessor, Margaret Lupo, did it. They still shuck the corn every morning. They still wash the greens by hand.

Rival Midtown tea room operator Mary McKinsey eventually bought the Ponce de Leon Avenue restaurant in 1951 but didn’t change the name to reflect its new owner until 1953. An official with the department said firefighters responded just before 4 a.m., following storms and heavy rain overnight. Officials have not confirmed exactly what caused the partial collapse. Whether you’re looking for a meal on the bucolic Chattahoochee River or cocktails 10 stories high overlooking all of Atlanta, you’ll be impressed with our list on Atlanta’s top restaurants for breathtaking views.

Our guests from Atlanta and beyond have supported Mary Mac’s Tea Room for more than 75 years, and we are dedicated to reopening and continuing Mary Mac’s legacy of Southern food and hospitality for years to come. On Wednesday, March 6, 2024, the roof above the Skyline dining room of Mary Mac’s Tea Room collapsed due to heavy rains. We are incredibly grateful that no one was injured, and that the vast majority of our beloved restaurant was not impacted. The restaurant celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.

They aren't going to seat you if your party isn't all there and you're all streaming in all willy-nilly. They'll call your name once or twice but if you don't come running to get seated, they'll pass you by. There's a buzzy anticipation there, as you wait, that something good is happening.

Women began opening up restaurants in Atlanta. But, with misogyny and women's rights as they were back then, women had a hard time finding ways to own and operate full scale restaurants. So, enterprising indeed, MacKenzie opened a "tea room" instead. Tea rooms were refined, cozy little establishments of Southern charm— perfect for a woman. Soon, there were 16 tea rooms throughout Atlanta. Mary Mac's original tea room could seat 75 guests (it's since been expanded many times over).

Some traditions at Mary Mac’s are kept for sentimental reasons, while others are maintained because they work so well. In 1945, it was quite uncommon for women, particularly in the South, to open restaurants. Mary MacKenzie was undaunted from her goal of serving the best southern food around, so she instead called it a “tea room,” inviting less concern from the patriarchy. At the time, hers was one of sixteen tea rooms in the area. We are working to reopen as quickly as possible and are supporting our team members during this process.

She then proceeded to rattle off well over a dozen must-haves. Served family, all you care to eat, dine in only for parties of 2 or more. Entire table must choose the Southern Special.

Today, Mary Mac's is the only original tea room that remains. Mary Mac’s Tea Room opened in 1945 and remains the quintessential eatery for Southern comfort food. It’s known across the country for its Southern staples such as fried chicken, collard greens, pot roast and fried green tomatoes. If the topic is Atlanta’s best fried chicken, Mary Mac’s is one of the city’s top contenders. The new owners say they aren’t making any big changes to the menu and will continue the tradition of offering first-time diners to Mary Mac’s a complimentary cup of potlikker and a cornbread muffin. Mary Mac’s traditions are the fabric upon which Atlanta was built; a place where all are welcomed with open arms and where each guest feels at home each time they return.

The dining room, in full accordance with COVID-19 public health safety guidelines, meanwhile, will re-open Monday, Nov. 9. Started in 1945 by Mary MacKenzie, Mary Mac's Tea Room was one of 16 tearooms in the city and served 75 guests. In its nearly 80-year history, Mary Mac's Tea Room has hosted politicians, tourists, and everyday Georgians.

Several years back, Martin, Jr. asked Ferrell to give him first crack at buying the business if Ferrell ever decided to sell. Martin, Jr. is now the CEO of the Taco Mac chain of restaurants and is also a former interim president of Morehouse. Harold never forgot the Southern hospitality or the legendary food (the pork chops are his go-to), and eventually made an offer to purchase the restaurant. John ran the business like a well-oiled machine, providing fabulous experiences to over 10,000 visitors a day. However, in the face of COVID-19 in March 2020, he made the challenging decision to close the restaurant for the safety of the staff and guests. Afternoon tea also proves a wonderful social occasion for the sober community.

Get your best gloves and fascinator out of the closet and give it a whirl. Tony Monachese of Paul Davis Restoration of North Atlanta said it’s likely that rainwater accumulated on the flat roof and forced it to give way. One of its owners declined to do an interview but said he doesn’t know when the restaurant can reopen. His main concern is for everyone’s safety.

They snap the green beans with their fingers and bake the breads and desserts in-house. They still put the attention deserved to the food and their guests. Martin, Rand, and the Bodnars plan to retain Mary Mac’s 100-plus employees. One of the restaurant’s six dining rooms will be renamed “Ms. Ellen’s Room,” in tribute to longtime Mary Mac’s employee and Martin’s favorite server, Ellen Fraley, who died over the summer. All types come to Atlanta's dining room. An upstart rapper and his crew might be seated next to Georgia's Attorney General. A man in a MAGA hat might be sipping tea next to a Biden campaign manager.

As Gen Z showcases a much different relationship to alcohol, and members of older generations rethink their own relationship to drinking, gatherings that aren’t centered around booze have gained traction. Almost any traditional afternoon tea menu includes the option to add bubbles, if desired, but it’s an afterthought — the tea will always be the focus. It's a loving community spread wide over a big table of a Southern spread. Get yourself to Mary Mac's Tea Room. Like family, they'll tell you how it is. Did I mention they don't seat incomplete parties?

Smothered fried chicken with gravy, mac and cheese, tomato pie, and all the rolls I could fit onto my plate. ATLANTA — An iconic Atlanta restaurant is closed after a roof collapsed in one of its dining rooms. Located at 224 Ponce de Leon Ave. NE in Atlanta, beginning Monday, Nov. 2, Mary Mac’s Tea Room is back for take-out orders and will re-open its dining room — following all COVID-19 safety protocols — starting Monday, Nov. 9. Visit the restaurant’s website at marymacs.com.

President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter have eaten at Mary Mac’s so often through the decades, the president has a dessert named after him. The peanut custard, first introduced during Carter’s gubernatorial campaign, was initially called Jimmy Carter Custard, rebranded as Presidential Pudding during Carter’s White House years and is now simply, Carter Custard. In 1972, Lupo’s husband Harvey quit his day job to become the restaurant’s host and buyer.

Read more about Mary Mac’s COVID-19 safety precautions here. Open for takeout, curbside pick-up, and dine-in service. The pencils on each table where guests fill out their own orders and turn in their cards to their server was a practice first developed by Mary McKinsey. If an order was incorrect, it would not be the server’s fault. The restaurant debuted in post-WWII 1945 Atlanta as Mrs. Fuller’s Tea Room.

Mary MacKenzie opened Mary Mac’s Tea Room in 1945 on Ponce de Leon Avenue, just east of the historic Fox Theatre on Peachtree Street. It was one of 16 tearooms in Atlanta at the time and seated just 75 people. Since its opening, the restaurant has expanded several times to accommodate hundreds of people in its six dining rooms. At its busiest, Mary Mac’s was serving 2,000 people a day and ordering truck loads full of fresh vegetables, including 25 bushels of corn, 25 bushels of green beans and 25 bushels of collards and turnip greens per week. Today, that commitment to freshness continues with all vegetables being shucked, washed and snapped daily. Before the COVID shutdown, the 13,000-square-foot restaurant, was making nearly $10 million in annual sales, making it one of the city’s largest restaurants.

The menu is as southern as the southern can get. It hasn't changed much in the decades since Mary herself was working hard in the kitchen. From the kitchen comes Brunswick stew and pot likker, fried green tomatoes and fried okra, ribs and cube steak, fried chicken and meatloaf, grits and butter peas, hoppin' john and pickled beets. The endless refills of sweet tea (the "table wine of the South")?

As far as the regular menu items, they have collectively earned rave reviews on every forum from Trip Advisor (winning a Travelers’ Choice award) to countless food critics and bloggers across the nation. Additionally, he made two major decisions. First, he would keep all 100+ employees on staff.

It’s one of the few places where true nonpartisanship and harmony exists. Not only will you find patrons of all types sitting all throughout the six rooms of the restaurant, but the halls are littered with hundreds of photos and newspaper clippings that truly show no allegiance. There are photos of former Georgia governors Nathan Deal and Sonny Perdue, national politicians like Jimmy Carter, John Lewis, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and even the freaking Dalai Lama! There’s even a chaotic mix of sports teams memorabilia, from West Virginia’s football team to Florida State University basketball. This is an institution lifted to remarkable heights by countless remarkable women. From the first two owners (Mary MacKenzie and Margaret Lupo) to dozens of staff members,  the impressive power of women runs through every inch of the restaurant.

This real or imaginary line can signify things like structure, procession, direction, viewpoints, lines of rotation, and more. An axis is used to organize and plan spaces as well as align design elements. An axis is a line used to describe the location and orientation of a building or other object. While symmetrical objects have a central axis, objects in a two- or three-dimensional space may have several axes that define their positions. All the parts around it don’t have to be symmetrical around an axis, but it can serve as the pivot point if you like.

Again, the traditional principle of leading does not apply to radial designs, so shift your pieces of text around to create different groups. This is one of the easiest and best ways to create hierarchy with your radial designs; especially because once you have things in groups, it’s easy to add styles to the different groups individually. I love radial designs because of the flexibility they offer. Rather than aligning your text based on its inner edge, look at the shape created by the outer edge of the text.

Disney Cruise Discounts and Deals

disney cruise line last minute deals

Walt Disney World Annual Passholders sometimes qualify for special rates on select sailings on Disney Cruise Line. Keep in mind that this is a self-service option, for people who know exactly what cruise they want to take, what stateroom, how dining works, etc. If you like to handle your own bookings directly, Undercover Tourist is a great choice. If you would like to have a personal agent who can help guide you through the decision process and be available to answer questions, then the full-service approach will be a better fit.

Travelocity Deals on Disney Cruises

The price of a Disney Cruise varies depending on a few factors. Deals on Disney cruises' inside cabins start at around $180 per person per night (before taxes and port fees). For oceanview staterooms, fares close to $225 per person per night are deals. And while the gold standard for cruise deals across the mainstream cruise lines is around $100 per person per night for balcony cabins, Disney is not a mainstream cruise line. Any balcony cabin on a Disney ship priced under $300 per night is a good deal. Disney Cruise Line's largest rooms are Concierge Class cabins, and come in a wide array of prices.

Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas Ship Details

independence of the seas cruise ship

While Independence of the Seas is a large cruise ship with a maximum capacity of 4,515 guests, its deck plan is well laid out. Cabins are spread over multiple decks, but bars, restaurants, pools and entertainment venues are almost all on decks 5 and 11 to 15. This keeps most public areas within a quick elevator ride or a couple flights of stairs away --  a good thing as  there are only two elevator banks on the ship. Instead of trying to impress with my choice of T-shirts, I have decided to start wearing a robe, as one does at a resort property on land, with a proper spa and hammam. The response among my fellow cruisers has been ecstatic.

The part of the contemporary sailing vessel where the malls are clustered is called the midship. It makes no sense on sea, or on land, or in outer space. It looks like a hodgepodge of domes and minarets, tubes and canopies, like Istanbul had it been designed by idiots. Vibrant, oversignifying colors are stacked upon other such colors, decks perched over still more decks; the only comfort is a row of lifeboats ringing its perimeter.

Independence of the Seas activities

To sail on a ship and not wake up to a vast blue carpet of ocean? Fun-loving Galveston is all about big thrills, great food and rich history. It’s definitely worth setting aside a few days to explore this vibrant seaside town. Make sure to try a Texas-style breakfast in the Strand District, stroll along the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, and pop into the city’s museums before or after your Caribbean escape.

On my cruise, the themes were resort casual, dress-to-impress and tropical. Specialty restaurants state their dress codes are smart casual (Giovanni's and Izumi) or formal (Chops), but on a three-night cruise, the only dress code is nearly anything goes. Royal Caribbean has one of the fastest Wi-Fi systems at sea, called Voom, and you can take advantage of this on Independence of the Seas.

That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship. Most Royal Caribbean ships also have Coke Freestyle machines where you can make 100 different flavor combinations. Royal Caribbean Independence of the Seas has 13 different bars and lounges where you can enjoy a beer or cocktail. It also has 1 other bars that are available for select guests. THE OCEAN IS TEEMING with fascinating life, but on the surface it has little to teach us. I usually tan very evenly, but something about the discombobulation of life at sea makes me forget the regular application of sunscreen.

Entrees will include seafood, chicken, beef, pasta and a vegetarian option. One Indian dish is offered nightly, usually meat-based with a vegetarian option available upon request. You can order premium selections, such as Maine lobster tail, surf and turf or a filet mignon from the ship's Chops Grille steakhouse, for an extra fee (ranging from $16.99 to $34.99). My balcony cabin was comfortable, with all the space I needed, but you didn't need a magnifying glass to tell it had been well-used.

The Living Room

In Chops, I saw men wearing both shorts and jeans though most were wearing collared polo or button-down tropical-style shirts. However, in late October 2023, the ship will reposition to Miami, where it will sail a mix of four-night Eastern and five-night Western Caribbean cruises, as well as three- and four-night Bahamas sailings. The kids rule the school on Deck 12 aft, with all the kids hangout spaces conveniently grouped around Johnny Rockets and the arcade.

That weird circular object by the waterslides is the Sky Pad, which used to be a bungee trampoline but no longer. It wasn't clear what it's used for now, though I saw open-play archery scheduled there. Follow up your pie with a scoop of ice cream at Ben & Jerry's, which offers 10 flavors in cups or cones for $2.50 to $4.

If serenity is what you seek, the spa is located on Deck 12 forward, directly above the fitness center. Get your hair and nails done in the salon or melt away your work-life stress with a massage or facial. Acupuncture, medispa treatments (such as Restylane fillers), men's shaves, waxing and teeth whitening are also on offer. For free stress relief, you'll find saunas and steam rooms in the men's and women's locker rooms. If you dare to boogie board or stand-up surf know that your successes and failures will be cheered by onlookers hanging out in the stadium seating surrounding the FlowRider. Tucker out little cruisers in the Sky Climber, a cat-tree-esque jungle gym for kids, encased in netting.

If any fisting is happening, it is probably in the Suite Neighborhood, inside a cabin marked with an upside-down pineapple, which I understand means a couple are ready to swing, and I will see none of it. The coffee tastes fine and the eggs came out of a bird. The ship rolls slightly this morning; I can feel it in my thighs and my schlong, the parts of me that are most receptive to danger. The 154,407-ton Independence of the Seas is 15 decks high and carries 3,864 passengers at double occupancy (or 4,627 at maximum occupancy) in 1,932 cabins. It was built in 2008, and its last major refurbishment was in 2018. Currently, it's deployed on short three- and four-night itineraries out of Florida to the Bahamas. The Independence of the Seas is one of three Freedom-class ships currently sailing with Royal Caribbean. The Freedom-class ships were the first to have the FlowRider surf simulator, which is now available across the entire fleet.

(The Ellie Finnerty's Taylor Swift singalong was standing room only, with the indoor and out-on-the-Promenade seating full up.) Across the street, so to speak, is Vintages, your go-to for a sophisticated glass of wine. Finally, room service costs $7.95 per order, occasionally with an 18% gratuity added in certain unspecified ports. Continental breakfast (juice, coffee, tea, pastries and bread, cereal, fruit and yogurt) is complimentary from 6 to 11 a.m. Hot American breakfast (pancakes, eggs, potatoes and bacon/sausage) incurs the fee.

As of 2019, the median income for crew members was somewhere in the vicinity of $20,000, according to a major business publication. Royal Caribbean would not share the current median salary for its crew members, but I am certain that it amounts to a fraction of the cost of a Royal Bling gold-plated, zirconia-studded chalice. I also saw plenty of guests in floor-length gowns, sparkly dresses and suits. Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room.

Passengers on Carnival's Infamous 'Poop' Cruise Are Having Their Day in Court

“Not if you use one, but if you fall in and wallow in it for a couple of days, yes,” Schiodo said. “Does that mean if you use a portable toilet you need this special testing for the rest of your life? “I got almost a little tired of people saying, ‘How can I help you?

Infamous 'poop cruise' ship gets failing grade for unsanitary conditions.

After finally getting off the Carnival cruise ship Triumph, this passenger waited for a ride early Friday in Mobile, Ala. "Soon after, she said some passengers panicked. 'People were hoarding food — boxes and boxes of cereal, grabbing cake with both hands,' she said. "Toilets stopped working and the 3,143 passengers and 1,086 crew had to urinate in sinks, she said, and eventually red plastic bags. According to the Times, "Debbie Moyes, 32, of Phoenix said she was awakened Sunday by a fellow passenger banging on her door, warning people to escape." An engine fire had left the ship stranded off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula. The compliance notice report said Carnival together with the engine manufacturer was investigating the problem and that installing spray shields would be an effective safety barrier.

Land Vacations

In 1997, Carnival launched 'Destiny,' the first cruise ship in the world to weigh more than 100,000 tons. And let's not forget about the Costa Concordia disaster in Italy last year in which the ship capsized, killing 32 passengers. DISASTER TIMELINE: How Carnival Went From 'Fun Ship' To 'Poop Cruise'

Nothing will be untouched with maintenance and technical work also being done. The ship will be completed at the end of April with the new name of Carnival Sunrise. You can watch the video of the Carnival security officer on the Carnival Fantasy disconnecting the recording and transmitting devices here. Los said in November that he believed Carnival had known about the problem since March 2012. The spray guards were partially installed on Triumph, but not on engine No. 6, Los said. The company gave the ship until Feb. 28 to come into compliance.

Apparently, cruise passengers aren’t scared of sailing on the Triumph, the notorious ship that stranded passengers and crew at sea for five days in February without working toilets after a fire erupted in the engine room. Carnival had to cancel 14 scheduled Triumph trips so that the ship could be repaired and upgraded. The Triumph received $115 million in improvements, including additional backup power, better fire-safety technology, and the addition of several new bars and restaurants, according to the Miami Herald. Almost four years ago, the Carnival Triumph lost power due to an engine room fire while the Carnival cruise ship was cruising in the Gulf Of Mexico. The Triumph lost power to its engines which operated its propulsion systems, shipboard lights, air conditioning, galley operations and hygiene systems.

That's only two months after passengers said that the floors were "flooded with sewer water." Last week, Carnival's 'Triumph' ship was towed into Mobile, Alabama after almost a week stuck at sea due to an engine fire. After deducting attorney fees and costs, and considering the passengers had to come to Miami for trial and incur lodging and travel expenses, they’re lucky if they didn’t lose money. Of course, seasonality plays some role in the rates charged (spring is a low-demand period for cruises, and all travel in general). And note that these prices are for the cheapest cabin (interior location), and don’t include taxes and port charges. Not only does it look like passengers aren’t hesitant to board the Triumph, some travelers may be banking on the ship being cleaner, safer and better than ever immediately after the renovations. It’s in the best shape it’s ever going to be in,” one Galveston resident told Houston’s KHOU.

Ships in the Carnival Cruise Line fleet

It described an incident on another ship outfitted with the spray shields that avoided a similar fire. The documents, first reported by CNN, are part of a lawsuit that was filed in February against Carnival Cruise Lines and its parent Carnival Corporation on behalf of dozens of the Triumph's passengers. Carnival’s final witness Wednesday was Suzanne Vazquez, director of guest claims and litigation. She was asked which ship is currently the cruise line’s top-ranked vessel based on customer feedback. Most of the passengers are seeking $5,000 in damages a year from Carnival for the rest of their lives, claiming they will need continuous medical monitoring because of what happened aboard ship. They want the money in lump sums based on government tables estimating their life expectancies.

In the aftermath, Carnival announced a $300 million program to add emergency generators, upgrade fire safety and improve engine rooms on all 24 of its ships. The cruise line also said it would repay the U.S. government an unspecified amount for the costs to taxpayers of responses to disabling accidents on the Triumph and a previous disabled ship, the Splendor. An expert witness for the passengers, Dr. Ernest Schiodo, testified that each person’s health problems were “caused by the exposure or aggravated by the exposure” to the Triumph’s horrific conditions, including the human waste. Some Triumph passengers testified on Carnival’s behalf Wednesday, including James Ede, of Houston, who said the crew kept them well-informed and provided plenty of water.

They also feature linens from the Carnival Comfort Collection, a full private bathroom and more. Premium Vista Balcony staterooms were designed to wrap around the aft corners of Carnival Triumph, giving you a unique vantage point from which to enjoy luxuriously panoramic views of the sky and the sea - and yes, take in even more of that sunshine. Aft-View Extended Balcony staterooms feature a larger balcony for more lounge-around room, more kick-back space; not to even mention some of the best stern-side views you'll find anywhere. Get ready to relax as you gaze upon Carnival Triumph's gentle wake from your spacious balcony. Stepping aboard the Carnival Triumph introduces you to a world of fun.

The six other cruise brands included in the survey, meanwhile, have seen scores decline 8% to 11% compared with early 2013 figures. After about five days in the Gulf of Mexico, the ship was finally towed to Mobile, Ala., and the weary, bedraggled passengers disembarked Feb. 14. Carnival sought to make amends by offering each passenger a $500 check, a voucher for a future cruise, refunds of most on-board expenses and reimbursement for transportation, parking and so forth. According to Carnival, at least nine other Triumph lawsuits are pending in South Florida federal court, including a proposed class-action that seeks to represent all of the roughly 3,000 passengers aboard the ship.

Spagnoletti echoed many of the passengers in crediting the crew with putting out the fire and making the best of a horrible situation. Passengers described unsanitary conditions after the fire, as toilets stopped functioning and an unbearable stench drove many to camp out on the decks. Carnival issued a statement calling the lawsuit frivolous and noting that the U.S. Coast Guard inspected and cleared the ship before its departure. Frank Spagnoletti, a Houston attorney who represents some of the passengers, said Tuesday that Carnival was negligent in maintaining the ship and allowed it to sail knowing there was a fire risk. Reuters add that "for all the passengers' grievances, they will likely find it difficult to sue the cruise operator for any damages, legal analysts said. Over the years, the cruise industry has put in place a legal structure that shields operators from big-money lawsuits." Lately, it looks like Carnival hasn’t had to drop prices so significantly in order to fill ships. There are still some deals starting as low as $159 for four-night cruises, but the best prices are for departures taking place six months or so in the future. Because cruise lines love early-bird bookings, this kind of steep discounting isn’t entirely unusual.

It’s the last-minute deals that really paint a clear picture that a ship is having serious trouble attracting passengers and is near desperate to fill cabins. Whereas a four-night Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Imagination ran as cheap as $149 in April, the least expensive similar Carnival cruises are starting at $269 to $289 this summer. A recent Harris Interactive poll indicates that consumers’ perceptions about the cruise industry fell sharply right after the Triumph incident. What’s more surprising — and more alarming for people in the business — is that the perceived quality of cruises has continued to decline, especially for Carnival. In the latest poll, the company’s quality scores are down 28% compared with the period just before the Triumph was stranded. Carnival’s perceived quality rating is also down 12% compared with the period just after the Triumph incident — which many assumed would be the cruise line’s absolute low point.
